Squalen Bulletin of Marine and Fisheries Postharvest and Biotechnology

Squalen publishes original and innovative research to provide readers with the latest research, knowledge, emerging technologies, postharvest, processing and preservation, food safety and environment, biotechnology and bio-discovery of marine and fisheries. The key focus of the research should be on marine and fishery and the manuscript should include a fundamental discussion of the research findings and their significance. Manuscripts that simply report data without providing a detailed interpretation of the results are unlikely to be accepted for publication in the journal.

Abstract

Sponges are sessile invertebrates that belong to the class of primitive and simple metazoans.Slow mobility causing sponges to develop a high adaptability toward environmental changes. Asfilter feeder, sponges bioaccumulate pollutants from their surroundings. Therefore, they can beused as tools to detect heavy metals pollutions and non-biodegradable chemical wastes.Ecologically, every sponge species demonstrates different level of resiliency toward disturbances.Observation on their community structures, including species diversity, richness and abundance,provides information on the biological integrity of their inhabited ecosystem. Detection ofenvironmental stress also can be conducted by measuring the expression of stress indicatorprotein such as Heat Shock Protein (HSP) 70 as biomarker in sponges. These sensitive anddiverse stress responses make sponges as potential bioindicators for biomonitoring program ofcoral reef ecosystem.

Abstract

Liquid smoke is a volatile compound that simultaneously evaporates from heat reactor throughpyrolization and condense in cooler. Liquid smoke was produced in several steps that arepyrolization, condensation and redistillation. Quality, composition and material in liquid smoke isinfluenced by wood type as raw material. The major component of liquid smoke are acid, fenolderivate and carbonil. Those components can be used as flavoring, coloring, antibacterial andantioxidant agents. Liquid smoke can be used as preservative because of its antibacterial andantioxidant activity. Fenol and acetic acid compounds in liquid smoke can inhibit bacterial growthsuch as Pseudomonas fluorescence, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcusaureus. Fenol also can be used as antioxidant by stabilizing the free radicals. Liquid smoke cangive specific flavor and better color in smoke products. Liquid smoke can be applicated in eel, fishor products diversification such as fish steak. Liquid smoke also can be used in agricultural andtimber industry.

Abstract

Lepidocybium flavobrunneumis a pelagic fish with high economical value. Its high price isdue to its nutritional contents that comprise of high unsaturated and low saturated fatty acids. It isreported that the total contents of Saturated Fatty Acids (SFA) in Lepidocybium flavobrunneumisonly 2.9%, while the amount of Unsaturated Fatty Acids are 97.06% that consist of 8.32% ofpolyunsaturated (PUFA) and 88.74% of Monounsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFA). Approximately,0.05% of linolenic acids -3 (C18:3), 0.51% of eicosatrienoic acids -3 (C20:3) and 1.98% ofdocosahexanoic acids -3 (C22:6) comprise the PUFAs; whereas the MUFAs is composed by84.71% of oleic acids -9 (C18:1) and 0.27% of nervonoic acids -9 (C24:1). -6in Lepidocybiumflavobrunneum contains 0.46% of linoleic acids -6 (C18:2), 0.72% of arachidonic acids -6(C20:4) and 0.01% of lauric acids (C20:0).

Abstract

The need for safe food products amid increasingly perceived widespread use of various foodadditives which are sometimes hazardous to health. Preservative is one of food additives intendedto extend the shelf life of food products. The preservative produced by lactic acid bacteria isbacteriocin. Nisin, one of bacteriocin produced by LAB Lactococcus lactis,is considered safeand allowed its use in many countries, including Indonesia. This preservative is widely used forfood products due to its ability in inhibiting bacteria, especially Gram-positive bacteria such asClostridium botulinum, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus hemolyticus, Listeriamonocytogenes, Bacillus stearothermophilus, and Bacillus subtilis.Nisin works actively at lowpH and can be used singly or in combination with other preservation treatments. Based on itsphysico chemical properties and bioactivity, the use of nisin in fishery products is more suitable infermentation process as well as fish canned in acidic medium such as tomato sauce.

Abstract

Malaria is deadly disease killing 1.5-3 million peoples on the globe a year. In Indonesiaespecially Papua, malaria is a number one killer disease. Finding resources of new drug malariais seriously needed due to resistance to many Chloroquin by Plasmodium. About 65% of marinePorifera from 12 classes in the taxa have recently contributed to our knowledge of biomedicalmaterial. Sponges are abundantely inhabiting Indonesian waters. In recent discovery reportedthat marine sponge Xestospongiafrom Papua has possessed a great ability against Plasmodiumfalciparum.These evidence thus stated Indonesian water is home of the potential marine drug formalaria. For sustainable reason, production live specimen throughout sea culture should to behighlighted. This review presents a development of malaria disease and the potential of Indonesianmarine biota as biomedical material especially for malaria disease.
